Chinese Retreat at The Peninsula Beijing

Chinese Retreat at The Peninsula Beijing

After a 4-night stay in Shanghai, I moved to the capital with the purpose to discover the Peninsula Beijing. It was my second trip in the city, few years after a fantastic stay in Aman at Summer Palace residence, so I was thrilled to visit a urban hotel this time.

The Peninsula Beijing is ideally located in the city, within walking distance of the Forbidden City and few minutes away by taxi from luxury shopping malls. And after its full renovation achieved in 2017, transforming it into a suite-only hotel, it became THE place to be for the most exigent travelers.

Design & Facilities

Henry Leung, a famous Hong Kong designer and long-term Peninsula collaborator, made an amazing job for the rebirth of Peninsula Beijing. The overall vibe is definitely luxurious, elegant and chic; a kind of modern Chinese palace.

With the renovation, the lobby has been totally revamped: it is now composed of a single staircase in white marble as masterpiece, surrounded by art pieces from Chinese artists. Simply stunning!

The indoor pool and the fitness center are two other key parts of the hotel completely refurbished, for the pleasure of all guests – including mine. The pool especially, which has been remodeled from white to dark green tones. The result is strong and impressive, symbolizing brilliantly what a Peninsula place is.

Accommodation

I stayed in a Deluxe Suite – the second room category – that was lovely decorated and arranged. I particularly loved the tones of white and dark wood that made the living room even bigger than actual, and the choice of premium furnitures. At the end, it gives to the suite lot of character and an elegant-cozy atmosphere.

In the bedroom, the iPad system performs miracles: the entire suite can be controlled, including A/C, lights, curtains but not only. It also contains a complimentary list of movies that you can play on TV; I already saw this system in Hong Kong and I have to say it’s really incredible.

Obviously, a luxury suite couldn’t be complete without a beautiful bathroom and I have not been disappointed! It was maginificent with white marble everywhere, a huge mosaic representing Gold Fishes – the hotel is situated on Goldfish Lane – and a gorgeous bathtube with TV-mirror as well as Oscar de la Renta amenities. Just perfect!

Dining

I had the chance to experiment all dining places at The Peninsula Beijing. First, buffet breakfast at Jing restaurant: selection was pretty large with both Asian and Western food, with the kitchen available to cook eggs “minute”. Nothing exceptional but I liked the cozy ambience of that place.

But for sure, anyone looking for an authentic Cantonese culinary experience should go to Huang Ting restaurant. Because of its traditional décor, because of its wonderful staff, because of its delicious fine cuisine… Look at that Chef preparing my peking duck in rolls, what a magical moment it was for me!

Afternoon tea at The Lobby

Then, The Lobby on ground floor is a nice option for casual lunch or dinner. I enjoyed a tasty Club Sandwich there, as well as a delightful afternoon tea. The Peninsula Beijing is a grand dame and she knows how to take care of you!

Level of exigency

Peninsula hotels have a long tradition of outstanding service quality and The Peninsula Beijing is no exception. As I already experimented in Hong Kong or Bangkok, I received a faultless service with a great attention to details; high exigency and passion for hospitality are the 2 ingredients of such legendary guest experience.

My special thanks to the concierge team, who helped me planning a city tour, and to The Lobby waiters who were very kind and proactive while I was working on my laptop a whole afternoon. I really felt at home!

Conclusion

Being a luxury hotel is not a matter of stars. In my view it depends on feelings and concrete services, providing an overall guest experience. And my experience was definitely great at The Peninsula Beijing, one of the best I ever had in Asia; just book and see by yourself!

Stayed from March 05th to 07th, 2019 – Sponsored media stay, but this article reflects 100% of my opinion and thoughts.

The Peninsula Beijing opened in 1989 and has been completely renovated in 2017, becoming an all-suite hotel with 230 rooms. I stayed in a Deluxe Suite – around 65sqm – which public rate starts at CNY 1,700++/night.
